Roberto Cardozo

Bandoneon

Born in Montevideo Uruguay on February 7, 1949, as Angel Roberto Cardozo Peña, he attended elementary and high school in Uruguayan State public schools.

At the age of 11, Mr. Cardozo started his study of the bandoneon in the Private Conservatory of Francisco Jaurena, father of the world known Raul Gerardo Jaurena, with whom, later in life, he shares the bandoneon row of the Orchestra Tipica of Maestro Antonio Cerviño. With this orchestra he toured the best clubs of Montevideo, acting in radio and television and the famous Bicycle Tour of Uruguay.

At the age of 16, on December 22, 1965, Mr. Cardozo took the test to become a Professional Musician, passing it with excellent score.

Since then, Mr. Cardozo performed with different Orchestras Tipicas, among them, the Orchestra of Mario Rubeinstein, of Walter Mendez, the Orchestra of Antonio Cerviño conducted by the Argentine Maestro and Composer Toto Damario, playing in all the voices until reaching the position of “First Bandoneon” in substitution of previously mentioned, Raul Jaurena.

After 8 years of performing with this last orchestra, he was selected by Maestro Donato Racciatti to perform as “Second Bandoneon” in his orchestra, performing in Argentina and Brazil. Mr. Cardozo was then selected to perform in Germany during the World Cup in 1974 but he did not travel to Germany, instead, he went to Venezuela where he was contracted for six months to perform in Venezuela, Margarita Island with the Los del Sur quartet.

Mr. Cardozo lived in Venezuela for 25 years. In 1999, he was contracted to perform in Sweden, accompanying singer Raul Cancela, together with the Uruguay Tango Trio until 2003, when he moved back to Montevideo, Uruguay. There he decided to go back to study with different professors until he auditioned for the Philharmonic Orchestra of Montevideo with Maestro Federico Garcia Vigil. He was chosen and on December 12, 2005 debuted during the summer season. He has been with the Montevideo Philharmonic since then, currently performing as the “First Bandoneon B.”

In January he arrived to the U.S. to join the Café Buenos Aires Tango Ensamble as its musical director. He conducts three rehearsals a week and performs every Wednesday.
